Finding York County Residents
York County does not maintain one public list of every resident. The right record depends on whether the starting point is a name, an address, a past household, or a court or estate question. One Map and the Assessor connect a known address to a parcel. The Register of Deeds connects named parties to recorded land instruments. Court and probate indexes can confirm a case or estate role, while library and archive collections are often the better route for an older household. Each source serves a narrow purpose. An owner label, a mailing address, a directory head of household, and a case party are different facts.
Use two independent details before carrying a name from one York County record to another. A middle initial, suffix, date range, legal description, case number, or documented relationship can prevent a same-name error. A parcel record may identify a property owner without establishing who occupies the address. A historic directory may place a household at an address for its publication period without proving a later move.
- For an address, locate the parcel in One Map and save the Tax Map ID, subdivision, and legal-description clues.
- For a recorded property event, search the Register of Deeds by the party name and document category, then read the linked instrument.
- For a known court or estate matter, use the statewide Public Index or York Probate search with the most specific name or case information available.
- For an earlier household, ask the library or Historical Center for a directory, newspaper, census, map, or surname-file lead from the relevant period.
- When an online result ends the trail, contact the custodian, use its counter, or make a focused South Carolina FOIA request.
Note: Preserve the source, lookup date, and exact spelling for every York County result before comparing it with another record.
York County Resident Records Desks
Three local offices form the main current-records starting point. The Register of Deeds keeps recorded land documents. The Assessor and GIS tools identify present parcel and property context. The elections office handles registration and voter services, but the public personal tool is for a voter checking that voter’s own record. The clerk and Probate Court are separate channels for court and estate questions. The York County street records route uses the parcel and deed tools in more detail when the goal is a named road or address.

York County One Map Records
For a current address, York County GIS directs users to One Map. Its documented routes accept an address, Tax Map ID, or subdivision, then open a report for the selected parcel. The report can join property location with CAMA detail, zoning, districts, school-attendance context, imagery, and available plat links. That makes it useful for identifying the right parcel before looking for a recorded instrument. The county cautions that parcel lines are approximate. A recorded deed or plat, not a map outline, controls the legal description.
The Assessor’s Evolve Public entry is another county property route. The stronger inspected workflow is One Map’s property search. Keep the situs address and mailing address as separate labels if both appear. A separate mailing line is a delivery detail, not proof that the named owner occupies the parcel.
| One Map control | Use in a York County search | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Address | Find a selected property location | Parcel candidate and report path |
| Tax Map ID | Confirm a parcel from a tax notice or prior result | Property identity and map context |
| Subdivision | Narrow a street that crosses developments | Lot and development context |
| Report | Open the selected property record | Parcel, CAMA, district, and possible plat details |
See the York County Assessor search entry before using the property route.
The county’s property-search entry is a starting point for parcel research, not a census of everyone connected to an address.
York County Deed Name Trail
The Register of Deeds provides the recorded land-event trail. Its online coverage is record-type specific: deeds from January 1, 1979, all plats, and mortgages from July 1, 1982 are available online. Start with the parcel’s legal description, lot or subdivision clue, then search a known party in the name index. The form supports grantor and grantee fields, entity type, category, date range, book or file identifiers, and property-description fields. Standard Search removes spaces, punctuation, and special characters, so deliberate spelling variants can matter.
For a backward land trail, a current deed party is normally searched as a grantee for the earlier acquisition. The earlier seller is then followed in the same role. Retain the legal description and plat reference because older instruments may not use a modern street number. The online boundary is not a missing-record conclusion: the Historical Center holds deed microfilm from 1785 through 1977 and directs transition-period questions to the Register of Deeds counter.
- Grantor
- The party conveying an interest in a recorded document.
- Grantee
- The party receiving that recorded interest.
- Parcel
- A mapped unit of land used for tax and GIS identification.
- Plat
- A recorded drawing that can define lots, blocks, and subdivision relationships.
Note: A recorded party is evidence of a document role, not a stand-alone statement of present residence.
York County Voter Record Access
MyscVOTES is South Carolina’s personal registration service. It asks for county, first name, last name, date of birth, the last four digits of a Social Security number, and a CAPTCHA. It is designed to let a voter view that voter’s registration, sample-ballot, polling-place, and related service information. South Carolina has no party registration. It is not a public street browser or a general household list.
A separate State Election Commission process sells voter-list products to qualified registered South Carolina voters. That process has county and district filters, specified output formats, prices, and a statutory restriction on commercial solicitation. The official description does not document a street-name filter. A known voter can also request inactive status, which removes the record from active voter lists and makes it unavailable for online lookup without deleting the underlying registration record.
The MyscVOTES login displays the fields a voter must supply.
The credentialed form helps confirm an individual’s own registration information and should not be treated as a public directory.
Current York County Resident Sources
Current sources answer different questions. A property report can show a parcel label and property attributes. The land index shows parties to a recorded instrument. The court index shows a public case path where available. A city staff directory identifies public employees, not private households. York County has no verified countywide association roster, and Rock Hill’s Neighborhood Empowerment material is a voluntary association and contact geography, not a member list. Treat each source as a narrow record, then verify the important detail with another custodian-held record.
| York County source | What it can establish | Keeper | Access path |
|---|---|---|---|
| One Map parcel report | Address, parcel, and current property context | County GIS | Public map/report |
| Recorded land index | Parties and instrument placement | Register of Deeds | Online, counter, archives by era |
| MyscVOTES | A voter’s own registration service | State Election Commission | Credentialed personal login |
| Trial Court Public Index | Public case and party context | Judicial Branch | Statewide search with county filter |
| City of York staff directory | Current municipal positions and contacts | City of York | Public web directory |
Official sources and commercial compilations do not play the same role in a York County resident search. A compiled result can be stale or attach the wrong person to an address. Start with the custodian that owns the underlying record.
| Official York County or state source | Commercial compilation category |
|---|---|
| Shows its own parcel, deed, court, voter, or archive record with a stated access path | May combine older records, user input, and sources whose update date is unclear |
| Lets the reader ask the custodian about coverage, correction, or a missing item | Cannot replace a custodian’s correction or certification process |
| Supports a narrow, documented fact check | Should never be the only basis for matching a name to a York County record |
The York County Taxpayer Portal provides a separate real-estate inquiry and payment route.
A tax portal adds account context, but it does not convert a property record into a list of occupants.
York County Court and Estate Search
For a named court matter, the South Carolina Trial Court Public Index is the official statewide route for York County’s Sixteenth Judicial Circuit. The search can use a county filter, party name, case number, or Tax Map Number. York County’s own guidance says to open the case number, then use the Actions tab for a document icon when one is present; related material may be under Associated Cases. Sealed and confidential records are excluded, and a no-result does not prove that no case exists.
York Probate Court is a different and useful heir-research channel. Its estate search covers 1975-current records, updates nightly, allows free viewing, and charges $2 per printed document. Search a decedent name exactly as recorded or use a case number. Estate and marriage material is also available on public computers at the Register of Deeds office. When a court or estate file is the needed record, use the clerk or Probate counter for access questions rather than assuming the web result is complete.
York County Public Filing Roles
A business or license record can help test a public filing connection, but it is not a resident directory. South Carolina’s Secretary of State search accepts a business name and offers entity, registered-agent, document, certificate, and UCC routes. A profile can show a filing relationship. The Secretary of State specifically cautions that it does not keep company officer and director names and addresses, and a registered agent is not necessarily an owner. Read entity status in the narrow context of the filing.
Use the South Carolina business-entity search to begin an entity record inquiry.
A public business filing may supply a name or agent lead that still needs to be checked against the record actually relevant to the York County question.
York County Claim Search Leads
The State Treasurer’s unclaimed-property search is another official name-based route. It can identify property held in an owner’s name until a rightful owner or heir provides the required claim proof. Use it as a lead for an estate or family-history question, not as proof that a person presently lives in York County. Check any name against a probate record, historical directory, or other independently relevant source.
The South Carolina State Treasurer provides the official unclaimed-property entry route.
The claim system can point to a name, but only the Treasurer’s process and supporting proof decide a claim.
York County Vital Record Boundaries
DPH vital records are request channels, not a general resident-name search. South Carolina birth records become public after 100 years and death records after 50 years. Before those limits, access follows S.C. Code §§44-63-80 through -86 and the applicant’s relationship or documented interest. DPH’s digitized death-index route covers 1915-1967, while a certificate request follows a separate eligibility and identity process. York County Probate Court handles county marriage licenses and has its own copy channel.
DPH’s Rock Hill regional counter is at 1070 Heckle Boulevard, Suite 3800, Rock Hill, SC 29731, 803-909-7307. Published 2026 hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., with Wednesday 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Mail, approved online or phone routes, in-person service, and state-office drop-off are documented options for different vital requests. Use the event type, date, and custodian to choose the correct route.
The South Carolina DPH vital-records hub outlines the state’s current request channels.
Vital-record requests require the proper form and eligibility, even when a historical index supplies a useful genealogy lead.
The DPH death-index and genealogy page shows the historical access route.
A death-index line can help locate a historic record, but it is not the same as a certified certificate.
York County Historical Resident Collections
York County’s strongest historical shelf is split between the library, the Historical Center of York County, and Winthrop University’s Louise Pettus Archives. Winthrop’s Rock Hill City Directories collection contains 121 bound city and telephone-directory volumes from 1913 through 2026. Its 1968 York County Cross Reference Directory covers city and rural areas, including Rock Hill, York, Clover, Hickory Grove, Fort Mill, Sharon, and smaller communities through street and numerical-phone sections. The Historical Center keeps city directories, newspapers, cemetery rosters, school annuals, maps, church records, and surname files in a public, non-lending Search Room.
The local historic-resources survey describes twentieth-century Rock Hill directories as annual or biennial volumes with a head of household at an existing address and, often, a spouse name, occupation, race, or ownership indication. It also warns that the owner of an occupied property is not necessarily identified. A directory following an address change may print the older number or street name in parentheses. For the collection years, access details, and entry-reading method, use the York County city directory collections.
Note: Ask for the actual directory volume and its front matter before relying on an abbreviation or printing convention.
York County Archive Preservation
York County was established in 1785, and the archival land trail begins almost immediately: the Historical Center reports deed microfilm from 1785, while the SCDAH guide describes conveyance books beginning in 1786. This is not a single online era. The Historical Center’s microfilm reaches 1977; it directs 1977-1983 transition research to the Register of Deeds; the current web system begins deeds in 1979 and mortgages in 1982. Record the document type and source at every handoff.
The Historical Center also received a state historical-records grant to microfilm 52 boxes of Court of Common Pleas Judgment Rolls from 1840-1869. Later reporting identifies 20,274 images preserved on five rolls. These civil files can supply property, estate, judgment, and family-relationship context when a directory or deed alone leaves a historical question unresolved.
York County ZIP Geography
A ZIP Code is a USPS delivery tool, not a city limit, county boundary, school zone, tax district, or parcel identifier. That distinction matters in York County’s Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Lake Wylie, Clover, York, and rural postal areas. Use USPS to verify the mailing ZIP for a particular address, then use One Map to confirm the parcel and jurisdiction. PO Box ZIPs such as 29716 and 29731 and Rock Hill’s unique 29733 should not be treated as neighborhood boundaries.
The USPS ZIP Code Lookup has address, city/state, and cities-by-ZIP modes. The ZIP-focused directory offers the full York County postal-geography table and the local address-assignment distinctions.
York County Public Record Limits
South Carolina FOIA provides a path to inspect, copy, or receive nonexempt public records, subject to exemptions and other confidentiality laws. A focused request identifies the custodian, subject, date range, address, case or parcel number, preferred format, and a request for a cost estimate. For records under 24 months old, the statute generally allows 10 working days for a determination and 30 calendar days for production. Older records use 20 working days and 35 calendar days. York County has an online request channel; municipal files must be requested from the correct city or county custodian.
The York County FOIA page explains its request route and timing notice.
A specific request helps the custodian find an address file, permit record, or older paper collection without overstating what an online search can show.
